About Us

The Anicare Veterinary Hospital is located in rural Central Saanich. Established in 1991 with the conversion of the existing farm house into a fully functioning small animal hospital. Scottish Veterinarian Dr. Jonathan Smith purchased the practice in 1999.

Dr.Jonathan Smith owns and operates the Anicare Veterinary Hospital. He grew up in Scotland and graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1989. He moved with his wife Ina to Canada in 1995. They live on the Peninsula with their 2 daughters, 1 dog and 3 horses. Jonathan works in all areas of small animal medicine and surgery, and has a special interest in allergies. He is also trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine offering acupuncture, herbal treatments and diet therapy.

Dr. Georgia Quinlan is a local veterinarian who travelled to Scotland for her training at Dr. Smith's Alumn, the University of Edinburgh. She is very excited to start her career here at Anicare. When she is not busy working, Dr. Quinlan loves to ride horses and spend time with her dog.

Dr. Meg Lainson is a part time veterinarian at Anicare. Dr. Lainson originated from New York City and received her veterinary degree from Colorado State University. She did her post graduate work at the Denver and London Zoos, treating everything from rhinos and snow leopards to anacondas and scorpions. She came to the San Juan Islands in northern Washington State in the 1980s and established an all species veterinary practice and Wolf Hollow Wildlife Centre. Her wildlife rehabilitation experience led her to assist animals caught in many oil spills from Washington to California, including the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989. Dr. Lainson followed a long-term dream to immigrate to Victoria where she worked for 8 years. She was able to hone her skills in a large and small animal practice that also provided emergency care. While there she provided excellent care for a wide array of birds, amphibians, reptiles, goats, sheep, llama, alpaca, pigs and mini-horses. She then returned to Washington and worked for a friend for 3 years with small animals and exotics. She has now come back home to work in Victoria. She also enjoys ultramarathoning, playing mbira (an African musical instrument) and acapella African singing. She has a weakness for fuzzy-faced dogs and is owned by an Australian terrier and an otterhound, with whom she does agility and nosework.
